Abilify prescribed for child, age 10

without comments

The doctor prescribed our ten year daughter Abilify as a mood stabalizer. It is 2mg, and she is supposed to take it at 4 pm everyday. We just got it today. It costs $433.91 for one month supply!! I thought her Adderall was expensive! That is rediculous! I read on the inserts that came with it that there are tons of possible negative side effects. I am not sure if I want to give it to her.

She is usually not bad in the evenings, just hyper. It's mainly the mornings that she gets in trouble. She is sometimes stormy: stomping, yelling, defiant. She doesn't stop until I make her. I can't reason with her. I can't calm her down. I usually have to paddle her, one or two swats. (for all of you non-spanking folks, don't worry, it's just a little toy rubber ball paddle.) Then she will have a temper fit. When that is over, she is an angel, like her bad self left and her good self came home.

She has been on Adderall since she was about 6 for ADHD. She started with 10 mg, and is now up to 20 mg in the morning and 10 mg at noon.

According to her counselor, she shows signs of early onset bipolar.

She eats well and is healthy otherwise, except that she started her mestrual cycle during the summer (yes, at age 10--crazy, huh?), which undoubtably accounts for the mood swings.

I just don't know what to do about giving her Abilify.

Any ideas?

Anyone on Seroquel?

without comments

My MD wants to start me on seroquel, starting tonight, for my bipolar (II). I have been on effexor, lamictal and abilify, but he's going to change everything especially by taking me off of the effexor and abilify (ravenous appetite with abilify though it works well). Anyway, I just read through the side effects of seroquel and am worried about some of them--especially the weight gain. Does anyone have any thoughts on this drug and if it's good or not? Thank yoU!

Treatment for bipolar II

without comments

I have lived (or suffered with) depression for years, diagnosed and started treatment in 2001 but had it for years before that. I've been on a number of anti-depressants but after 6 months they always seemed to fail me. A few years ago I started seeing a new doc who told me I was bipolar II--I said yea, right--I wish I was then I'd have the manic episodes and actually get some stuff done during the day! She started me on a different antidepressant and lamictal. Over the last two years she has changed the anti-depressant several times and kept wanting to add different meds, but I think I was in denial. I have a lot of education in the mental health field, and I really didn't believe I was bipolar.

Anyway, currently I'm on effexor 150mg daily, lamictal 200mg daily, abilify 2mg daily. I'm also dual-diagnosis--bipolar and substance abuse. I recently (this month) went through detox for opiate abuse. For the last year at least I know that my symptoms and frequent depressive episodes were caused by my pill use, so I know that I wasn't appropriately being treated--it was my fault. This week I started seeing a different psychiatrist, and he said I should in no way be on an anti-depressant and he couldn't believe I had been on one in so long. Also, because of the wt gain with abilify, he wants to take me off that as well and start me on Geodon. Is anyone here on Geodon? Has anyone been on abilify and prefer one over the other? The research I've done shows that lamictal is a good drug, so I'm going to stay on that. Unfortunately we can't change my meds around right now because we have to get me stable from the pill use/withdrawal. Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do You Think Doctors Over Medicate

without comments

I remember starting out with maybe one or 2 rxs now I have a whole bagful.
The doctor said I was hard to treat with meds.
I am on paxil 60mgs klopin 3 mgs vistrial 400mgs inderal 60mgs tradzone 100mgs tomamax 40 mgs requip as needed 100 mgs.
plus I had neck surgery in march now also on soma was on flexrall
lyrica 60 mgs loratab 7.5 4 a day phenergan 25mg as needed.
I was on darvon it did nothing and was on forciet it did nothing and lortab barley helps the headaches. I had cortdone shots put in my neck friday a little better. I have been on lithiumn sequeral abilify rememorn wellburton prozac lezapro effexor buspuar zoloft depacoat the one that causes a rash which I got and it worked good some other I canot remember.
When I had surgery I was nervous they had to give me two shots of valiumn
to relax me which hardley did anything. I usually have to take a nap most days. I have taken all these meds and still awake. I feel like at times a torando could come right through and I would be like no big deal. My shrink said he was running out of meds for me to be on.
I guess he said I was restaint to many. The ones for bipolar I am on now seem to work okay the deprission has lifted mood swings not as bad but I am sick of all these pills. Now they are trying to get my pain under control since my surgery I have had horrid headaches which I never had before andmy neck hurts but I had no choice in my spinla surgery. I worry about what all these pills will do to my body down the road but once you are on them getting off some ofthem is very very hard paxilis one of them and of course klopin.
Lithiumn started making my hair come out and I said no more I have very thick hair and Itoldthe doctorgetmeoffthis now. I was shedding like a dog.
Does anyone else take all this crap.
Kelli....
