What was your biggest fear…

without comments

I was just thinking about how different things are since I'm not drinking. No more falling down knocking things over, no more trips to the liquor store with my hands shaking so bad I could hardly hand the cashier the money. I'm no longer paranoid about police cars, I don't wake up sick every morning. The constant anxiety and depression are becomming distant memories.

But most of all my biggest fear is gone, crazy as it may sound when I was drinking my biggest fear was running out of liquor. It sounds odd but no matter how drunk I was I remained cognizant of how much liquor I had left. I started buying vodka by the case to limit the trips but the day always came when I'd need more. What a dilema that always was, risk getting a DUI or go through withdrawal. I always took the risk and luckily never got a DUI.

Just hoping that I'll never have to relive any of that. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!!

Retail employee’s post recession tips for Black Friday.

First off, there are fewer of us this year, if you need help you'll have to wait your turn.

If you see a cart in the parking lot near where you park...grab it! More than likely there wont be any where they belong, and if there are, they'll be full of unspeakable trash.

Do NOT leave your cart unattended in the store, it WILL disappear. Not "may", will.

Arrive as early as possible if you want those nifty sales items listed in the paper. "While supplies last" means just that. If you mosey on in after 10:AM, you're pretty well screwed...to put it bluntly.

Because ther are so few of us associates now-a-days please do your research before you come in. Have a plan B.

If an associate is truly rude to you, don't scream at the cashier, ask for a manager.

All Christmas trees are harvested at the same time, if you want a nice looking one, get it early. The longer you wait, the homlier they'll get. I recommend hosing them down when you get home too, they're quite filthy, and some even contain critters!

Yes you look fabulous dressed to the nines, but you're going to be in a lot of LONG lines today, wear comfortable shoes.

The closer you park to the front of the store, the more insanity you'll have to deal with when you leave, and people are truly crazed on Black Friday.

Remember the old saying: You get more bee's with honey than you do with vinager.

In the land of "Duh!":

Do NOT leave your children or your purse unattended.

Keep you receipts if you want a quick returns experience.

If you must talk on your cell phone, find a place thats out of the way.

When you do find an associate, don't just butt in, wait your turn like a civilized human being.

Paying it Backward–A Thanksgiving Story

without comments

Over the past few months, my daughter and I have made a concerted effort to eat healthier and we've done fairly well. One of the ways we've been able to stick to our healthier eating plan is to occasionally allow ourselves to splurge on something not so healthy. So we allow ourselves one meal per month where we can eat anything we want.

This month we decided that we wanted to try McDonald's new southern fried chicken biscuits and today was our "splurge day," so we stopped at the drive-through window at our local McDonald's this morning and ordered up a chicken biscuit for each of us. When it was my turn to pay for the food, I handed the cashier a $10.00 bill and she immediately handed it back to me and said, "the woman in front of you paid your bill, told me to tell you ladies to have a great day, and you can thank her by doing something nice for someone else today."

Her simple act of kindness really brightened my day. So as my way of paying it forward, I chose to "pay it backward." I told the cashier I'd like to pay the bill for the person behind me in line. The line was long at the drive-through window, so I hope that everyone was able to pay it backward, too.

As soon as we had our food in tow, my daughter and I headed down the road chomping on our chicken biscuits and as we did, a woman in a red sports car passed us in the left lane and tipped her biscuit at us in thanks. She was the woman behind us in line.

I am so thankful for all the blessings I've received this year and today, I'm especially thankful for an act of kindness from a total stranger.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone, and if you have a chance to do so, consider paying it backward to someone waiting in line at a drive-through window the next time you make a fast food run. Sometimes fast food can be food for the soul.

food stamps, drugs & booze

So I just responded to a thread about crazy neighbors in another forum, but it really got me thinking & pretty angry. My neighbors don't have much money & 2 young kids, but they always seem to find money for things they want. Here's a quick brief. Like I already mentioned 2 young kids, husband has kids from previous relationship so he pays child support. She smokes pot every day after dropping her kids off at school & I think again after she picks them up. She pays about $5/each for any pain pills she can get her hands on. She takes her son's afternoon Rydalyn pill, so she can get a buzz. She regularly drinks as well, so does her husband. They both smoke at least a pack a day, but then run out of money about a week before payday. And here's the kicker. They collect food stamps because they don't make enough money to get by. Please tell me how that works. I've recently started working at a grocery store where I had a customer who used her food stamp card to buy groceries & BEER, then at the last minute added a couple packs of cigarettes. I know the food stamp card doesn't cover liquor & cigarettes, but seriously where are these people's morals??? How is it that they can take advantage of our tax money?? If you need food stamps to survive, then you shouldn't be able to buy drugs, cigs & booze while your kids suffer. Oh, and my husband was at a gas station the other day when a couple walked in with 4 YOUNG CHILDREN while the parents used the welfare check to buy cigs & booze. The cashier was disgusted by it, but she said there's nothing she can do. They ARE ALLOWED to use the money for it. Please someone explain this to me!!!

Drunk dude buying booze.

I've been feeling really anxious lately, so I just now went down a few streets to the store to get some caffeine-free diet Pepsi (yeah, I know...exciting!).

Well, while walking up to the checkout, I witnessed a rather loud guy purchasing a bottle of booze (I knew he was blowed). The cashier sold it to him anyways. After he walked away, I walked up to the counter to pay for my pop (the fumes from his body were lingering in the air) and asked the cashier some questions, like: "Don't you have the right to refuse to sell?" She said, "Yeah, but we're about to close anyway. That's the third time he's been in tonight to buy booze." She seemed pretty indifferent.

I left the store shaking my head...Now I'm kicking myself. I don't know if he was planning on driving. It didn't even occur to me to hang out by the store and see if he got behind the wheel. I didn't have my phone with me because for once I left it at home--not that it would have mattered because I wasnÂ’t thinking clearly anyways. I got absorbed into my own thoughts about alcohol and drunkenness. I don't know if he even got into a car. I don't know if he's behind the wheel now. I really hope he doesn't kill anyone.

OT - update on me

Okay, so ya'll know that my liver enzymes were elevated and I went back and had some blood test done which determined that my hep c is active ... I am going to see a gastroenterologist on the 16th of sept to determine liver condition and I'm sure she will suggest treatment, but until then I am just taking my milk thistle and drinking my dandelion tea LOL

I've stopped smoking and have a week under my belt YAY GO ME!

I quit my job as a cashier, got a business license and have started out on a new business venture that would probably leave most scratching their heads ... since we are not suppose to post links if your curious to see what I am doing now just google Nit Picky Of Oregon (not the formal website, just a simple draft of an idea) starting from the ground up with little money, but with time comes change and progress and I will optimize as I go. (I've had two jobs already!)

School is starting up again and Savanna is going to kindergarten ... I am so excited for her. Dakota is doing great and we've been having fun this summer, Elijah is such a boy and full of mischief ...

Anyhow that is the scoop.

Love to all my friends and family here on SR

Hello all,

I'm new. I left my alcoholic bf of almost 4 years. So miserable it was. Such a waste of time. Like walking around with a dark rain cloud hovering above my being. I lost a sense of myself. I stopped talking and socializing with lifelong friends. Financial troubles. Of goodness, such a waste! I tried to further my education. I am a nurse now. That program was hard but it was even more difficult when with an alcoholic. All the pain and sorrow i've endured. I came to the realization a couple of days ago that i can not change him, i can not help him. He has to want change and help. And I can't do any of that. I tell him all the time, that only an alcoholic can tell you how to stop drinking and live sober, not me! He kept me for so long with the freaking pity parties, guilt, manipulations!

He claims that everything he does he is doing for "us." Oh yeah?? How so?? I can count on one hand how many months out of 4 years he has a kept a job. There are many many months that i paid rent, two cars, insurance, cable, phone, electricity and food all by MYSELF with absolutely NO help!! And when he did work, how many times has he squandered away plenty of money at the casino all under a drunken bliss?? So who had to come to the bill rescue?? ME!!

How many times has he left me sitting at my old cashier's job stranded waiting for him to pick me up, long after the store closes at night? Plenty of times. Yall it even came to the point where i was plain nervous when it was time to get off cause i didn't know if i was going to have a ride home or not. I know that is stupid because why in the world would i give an alcoholic a free run of my precious vehicle that i am paying for?? Don't worry about. It eventually got repossessed anyway. Goodness I was sooo sooo stupid!

First DUI last month. Do you think that stopped him?? Nope! Still drinking and passing out.

He has attempted to stop drinking three times i know of. Only to go back to it within a week. Has been hospitalized twice for detox. Now he doesn't drink in front of me. Now he hides it in the mailbox. Under a bush. Somewhere in his car. And at least he has some sense with a DUI not to drive and a get a drink. He has some other enablers to drive him to the liquor store now!

Yes i am bitter. I just want my life back.
