Go confidently in the direction of your dreams
I'm realizing that I've been sort of waiting for my life to change or my mood to change or my enthusiasm to change on its own, that one day I will out of the blue be touched by inspiration and happiness. I have been waiting to wake up suddenly in control, successful and content.
I know this sounds so basic, but I'm really just realizing that making a change has to be such a purposeful move on my own part. Never very good with structure and discipline to begin with, I've really been living re-actively and randomly, I have lost my compass and I've been allowing myself to just ricochet between a rock and hard place, gravity dictating that each time I'll hit closer to the ground.
My life is how it is because I haven't made the move to change it. I need to seek people out. I need to ask for help. I need to realize that I am not good at something because I'm waiting for the whim to practice instead of having the discipline to work at it. I need to wake up and decide that I want to be happy and work towards being happy.
I have to have the discipline to reach out today, on a Day 1 that I'd rather spend huddled under the covers.
I have to shrug off the reactionary haze and decide what I actually want my life to look like.
The title of the post comes from a quote written on a recent gift someone gave me; I'm starting to believe that there are no accidents.

I just wanted to say…
thank you to everyone at SR for the support that you have offered me as well as countless others. Since last April, when I "discovered" this forum, I have turned to you in times of crisis and you have always been there. Sometimes I post a lot, sometimes I just read for support and inspiration. But I always know that if I need you, you will be there for me without fail. As I feel I am there for you. What a wonderful family. I try to log on at least every few days, but if it goes longer, I sometimes feel like I am jumping into the middle of a game with unknown players. But in any event, I continue to be awed by the bonds that are forged here. Aren't we lucky, in this crazy world, to be comforted, supported and encouraged by "strangers". I don't know about you, but sometimes when I just shake my head over the state of the world we live in, it gives ME great hope to know that you are all out there. It makes me think that perhaps the person behind the desk might be Anna or Carol or anyone here. That thought makes me regard this "stranger" in a new light; one who has their own life and its attendant issues, a frail human being just like ME and yet is willing to selflessly reach out to someone else in need. So, thank you. :ghug2
Thank You SR!!!
Hey guys. I haven't posted here in a few months. I joined in Jan. with a New Years resolution and another attempt to sober up. I'd make it a month then relapse. I continue to surf the forums to find inspiration and insight. My last drink was on July 15th. Today marks 150 days sober. I wanted to thank everyone here for sharing their stories and experience. I don't post often, but reading this forum has been a major factor in my recovery. Thank You.
Na meeting went well. I think
Well went to my first NA meeting last night and at first was a little back-offish. I kind of felt (if anyone saw half-baked) like that. I thought people would laugh at me for having such a small addiction (addiction none the less) 8 at the most vicodins in one day etc. Here were people taking 20, 25 a day. But I talked a little and they made me feel at home and knew just because I did not take as many as one may take it does not trivialize the addiction. Which was nice.
Here again on day 2. Dont feel much W/D's as I only took the one time but am tired and a little out of it.
Again thanks to everyone here. Your stories and inspiration inspire me as well.

OT-Name your all-time favorite rock song that makes you boogie till ya barf!
I got this so-called "inspiration" this afternoon, when a local radio station was blasting some great oldies from the 70's and 80's. Yes, you "young pups" can join in here too ... just remember what your parents listened to.
Those of us who are fossils can clearly remember what songs got us up on the table and howling at the moon!
Once in awhile, we all need to just enjoy being in each other's company on this board. It's the holidays. Let's make it as joyful as possible, regardless of our circumstances!!!
My all-time favorite that gets me howlin' at the moon: "MY SHARONA."
Okay, I stared this, so I'll cheat: also, "IT'S RAININ' MEN." (Hallelujah!!!):lmao

Hazelden - Thought for the Day
Just wanted to post this for some reason:

You are reading from the book Today's Gift
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.
--Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein knew in his heart that the source of all his knowledge was not himself, but a mystery - something or someone outside himself. And it left him in awe and wonder. He knew also that while genius may be ninety percent hard work and only ten percent inspiration, all the hard work in the world amounts to nothing without that outside, mysterious inspiration.
He was right. We can work hard and play hard. We can paint and draw and write and develop formulas all our lives, but none of it will be new or different unless we are open to inspiration from some power outside ourselves that also, somehow, is deep within us. To be really good at anything, whether it's playing baseball, designing fashion clothing, fixing an engine, or cooking, we must believe in some creative force that helps us excel. When we see that force at work, we stand in awe at the wonderful and mysterious gift we have been given.
How have I been inspired to discover something?

Inspiration for those who need something positive.
I have a link that I go to very day to read a poem to give myself something to think about during my day. So I decided to start a thread of things that are important to me and if you have something to add, by all means post it here.
May we all be a flower:
The Flower in Me
© By Amanda K. Girard
I am like a flower
Not sure of when I will die.
Not sure of when I will grow back again
When I am crushed with pain and cry.
I am not sure if I can hold myself up
When I ache with unbearable pain.
What do I do when my petals fall off?
Do I go find them out in the rain?
What do I do when I'm not given enough water, to make it through the day?
What do I do when I look up in the sky?
And the sun doesn't show a ray?
I stand as tall as a flower would,
As long as I possible can.
I will stand and show my colors,
That is what I plan.
I may drupe and my petals may fall,
But that won't stop me from growing.
My love, honesty and beauty,
I will keep showing.
I am like a flower,
Strong and supreme.
I may be trampled on,
But I will never lose faith in my dreams.

Enter a peaceful, powerful focused state

State of focus
To be highly effective in what you do, enter a special state of being that you can create with your own intention. Enter a state of focus.
In this state, trivial outside events do not have the power to distract or annoy you. You simply accept them, move past them, and continue working on what's truly important to you.
In your focused state, there is no hesitation or worry about getting it wrong. You move ahead with steady, persistent efforts, knowing that even the mistakes will lead to learning and improvements.
Always with you in your state of focus is a clear and authentic sense of purpose. The energy to keep going and to keep focused comes from remembering why.
When you are focused you are curious, flexible, and open to new ways of creating value. At the same time, you're able to keep yourself solidly on track toward the specific goals you have chosen.
Enter a peaceful, powerful focused state. And make good things happen for your whole world.
